Does anyone have any tips on DIY property maintenance and repairs? i'm just about to make the leap into the world of property ownership and like many first time buyers i'm on a tight budget so am looking to keep costs down as much as possible.

In particular one of my first tasks will be to repair some neglected sash windows, they appear to be fairly sound but have layers of flaking paint and don't operate particularly smoothly.
